Plans are widely available for a huge variety of dolls house designs, especially for the most popular 1/12th scale. Complete plan drawings are available from less than £10 and often seem to represent an extremely affordable way to get into the hobby of the miniature property enthusiast. Building from plan, however, is not a decision to be taken lightly as the construction can often be complex, time consuming and requiring a reasonable level of woodworking skill. The large number of individual pieces that need to be marked out and cut with precision for the building to fit together squarely and with clean joints can sometimes be daunting, before the process of building even begins. The relatively low cost of the plans, too, is most likely to prove to be one of the smallest expenses in the process as sheets of MDF (Medium Density Fibreboard) commonly used in doll house construction can make cutting errors costly. Having said this, however, building a model property from just two dimensional paper plans can be one of the most rewarding elements of the hobby. Marking out, cutting and assembling will require a range of woodworking tools and the knowledge to use them, but it is not an insurmountable task for those people with the required competence, patience and enthusiasm.
